Equally just as relevent to ‘How Charice was cast in Glee‘ due to her upcoming debut on the TV musical series this coming September 21st, is how her viral video landed on Youtube due to references made to it after returning to Star King for the third time in Korea for her self-titled international debut album Asian Tour. In the viral video, she was belting the song ‘And I Am Telling You’ from the Broadway musical ‘Dreamgirls’, wearing pink, hair pig-tailed, stomping her right foot, and tossing the mic. Have you gotten a glimpse of it somehow recently?

The YouTube video that went viral 3 years ago unfortunately is no longer available now. After hitting 5 million views, the video was taken down because of a copyright claim by SBS, the network that owns the rights to Star King. Also, the Youtube channel account owned by a coolsmurf, the one that uploaded the viral video, was not spared and was suspended, making the rest of the videos in the channel unavailable too. Only a glimpse of flashback clips of the viral video in current promotional videos introducing Charice survive online while coolsmurf, for his part, has to be contented with just the mere mention of that-video-from-Youtube, knowing that it was his own video upload.

After her return to Star King, we get the chance to pluck this part of Charice’s history, as the Youtube sensation, out of obscurity. Coolsmurf, who goes by the name of Alvin Lim in the real world, was recently interviewed by a blog site at krvilla.blogspot.com. Would you believe that there was a backstory surrounding the viral video upload?

Coolsmurf narrates. After a week Star King with Charice aired, a Super Junior fan requested for an English subtitled video of the whole segment Charice was on to understand it. Although the fan further said to look at this young girl belting out tunes, to which he didn’t think much of it at first, he did the subbed video anyway since he does it regularly on his Youtube channel. It took him half a day to complete and upload. And while working on the video and got to the part where Charice was belting ‘And I Am Not Telling You’, he felt like he was there in person watching live. He said it was sensational.

The role of the Super Junior fan, although unnamed, could easily have been left out. Everyone would have assumed that a Charice fan uploaded the video. But, this was coolsmurf’s way of giving the same credit as he also deserves, all this time. Although he was not a fan at first, but he became one before the video earned its first view on Youtube.
